Today has been largely me shitting myself about the border crossing and Mexico in general. I did however manage to find time to wash some clothes, and do some money laundrying at the same time. The clothes went in the dryer, the money got sort of, blown dry, ..ish.
I booked on to a bus that is supposed to take me a fair distance in-country - 9 hours in fact. The theory being, a lot of the n'er do wells like to hang around the border waiting for a patsy to rip-off. That's been the case with every super dodgy border crossing I've ever done anyway. So in my head at least, if I sail through on a nice shiny bus until get well inland, there'll be less sharky rogues to meet me at my in-country destination. So Tampico it is. Not on the tourist radar, but on the Gulf of Mexico coast, and therefore beachy, and warmy and cocktaily ...hopefully.
Just before the big off, I managed a good look at the Rio Grande. Star of many a Western (well at least one that I can think of) and the natural border line between the US and Mexico throughout a large chunk of Texas.
The Rio fairly Grande. USA on the left, Mexico on the right.
US Waterborne Highway Patrol. ...And when you're faced with a terrified Mexican peasant emigre trying to swim a wide and fast flowing river, you'd better come packing some heat. Three massive machine guns plus assault rifles and sidearms should do the trick ...can't be too careful.

Dude, good luck with the Border crossing - am sure US immigration will be delighted to usher you south. Go find yourself a Fish Tacos shack down by the beach - best food in Mexico
