Day 18 - Tampico

So I rather overindulged after looking for a shit hotel - they all tried to rip the gringo off - I went for a brand name at twice the cheapies price, but managed to keep my dignity intact at least, if not my budget. Plus it means I’m in the nice end of town and the hotel isn’t half bad as it happens.
Excluding aborted hotel inquiries, it was about a 4 mile hike from the bus in full pack. And this time I had my legs out and a t-shirt no less.
I’ve managed to remember precisely 3 words of Spanish, mucho, gracias, and dos. So with that and some pointing, I’m able to thank any barman in the region for bringing me 2 beers - and that’s it. No one really speaks much English, which means I’m back to miming my way around the place. The rest of the time it’s me speaking in very polite English and instinctively reverting to Bulgarian as soon as someone throws a question in Spanish my way.

Tampico is perfectly fine. Not quite UNESCO standard, but a working town with some rough bits and some nicer bits. It knocks Bracknell into a cocked hat that’s for sure, and (famous last words) appears to be without menace, just Mexicans doing what Mexicans do - which isn’t a lot, but they seem happy enough just staring at people, well me, and that seems to get them through the day just fine.

There was more to consider in this evenings exploration of Tampico, but I'll leave that for the time being and think about how to approach that particular topic publicly when I'm sober.

Remember, there's always someone having a worse day than you. Mr Turtle bottomed out at low tide on this pipe, and then had the bad luck of discovering his rescuer was Mr Crocodile.

Nice churchy stuff, palm trees, parks to wander around, cold beer, the basics are all here at least.

Mexicans relaxing at work. And staring at the big chap with the pasty legs.
